How to check your FACEBOOK notifications with Google Reader

You can check your Facebook notifications in Google Reader, which could be very convenient if you're already a big Google Reader user.

There are many ways to check your Facebook notifications throughout the day. You might use push notifications from your mobile app or perhaps you simply go to Facebook's Web site and see if you have any new notifications.
Another way to check Facebook notifications is to use an RSS reader, like Google Reader. If you're already in Google Reader for most of the day checking your news updates, adding your Facebook notifications might make sense. Here's how:

Step 1: Go to https://www.facebook.com/notifications and make sure you're logged in to your Facebook account.

Step 2: Copy your RSS link, located at the top of your list of notifications.

Step 3: Click the Subscribe button in Google Reader, paste your RSS link, then click Add.

Step 4: Check Google Reader on the Web or on your mobile app to make sure your Facebook notification feed shows up.

That's it. To see more details of each notification, click on the individual notifications from Google Reader and you'll be taken to Facebook's Web page to see the photo, link, comments, etc.

3 Great Methods for Reclaiming Lost Backlinks

Reclaiming old backlinks is the easiest and most efficient link building method you can perform.
I love digging into what I like to call the "catacombs" of large, established websites that have many years of history behind them to find little bits of link gold.
There are numerous methods to reclaim old backlinks. The three greatest methods for reclaiming lost backlinks will be found on pages that are down or redirected, are buried in old content, or used to link to you in the past.
In his great article on the topic Link Equity Salvage: 7 Steps for Finding Your Long-Lost Links,Garrett French breaks down this process into several broad steps that every link reclamation effort includes:
Compiling lists of old page opportunities.
Checking statuses and checking links of pages.
Redirecting pages.
1. Reclaim Links From Broken or Pages With Multiple Redirects

Run a Deep Crawl
This can be done using Screaming Frog, IIS SEO Toolkit, Xenu Link Sleuth set to spreadsheet export. Whatever you choose here, the key is deep crawl. Try to grab the whole site or as many pages as possible.
Some edge cases may include:
If you have access to the site, some crawlers have a feature for you to search for orphan pages [Xenu], as mentioned in French's article discussed above.
If you have a large site, consider running the site on a server, so you can give it enough resources to be able to crawl the entire site, without crashing your computer.
Grab all 300 Level Redirects and 400/500 Level Server Response Errors
Create two lists: One with just redirects and one with server response errors.
For pages with server errors, run backlink data and identify errors. This can be done easily by running a bulk backlink checker, such as the one provided by Majestic SEO on Use Fresh Index setting.
For redirects, use a header checker tool to follow the redirects back. Sometimes you will uncover years of nested redirects, as pages have moved with tons of trusted aged backlinks. To do this, run the your redirects through a bulk header checker, such as the one provided by SEOBook or one of the many others that are on the web. If you find that some are nested, rerun this data until you get to the original page. Once you've tracked all the redirects back to their original page, run the list through a backlink checker, just as if you were checking for backlinks on 400/500 level pages.
2. Better Utilize Links From The Catacombs Of Your Site

This method goes back to your crawl of the site. If you were able to identify a ton of orphaned pages or ancient content that has been buried your site, such as:
An old blog that was started, run for only year, abandoned, and replaced.
Old press release section you stopped using or that was in place before you acquired the site.
Old "about" section pages with backlinks, that new versions of pages were created but not redirected.
Old article sections of the site.
Old subdomains that are no longer in use.
Once you've gathered these pages, directories, or subdomains, see if any have backlinks. If they do, redirect the given page to the newer version of the page, the next page up in the information architecture, or to the homepage, depending on your situation.
Sidebar: Especially with tracking down all the subdomains on a site, having access to the site tends to be important to get a comprehensive sweep of all subdomains. I know that you can try to do a dig in terminal – for those of you that are nerdy like me – but most servers don't let you do that because of potential security issues. If you don't have access to the backend of the site you're working on, running a crawl and seeing what search engines have indexed are your best bet for identifying really old subdomains. If anyone knows of other methods, feel free to comment.
3. Reclaim Your Linkrot Backlinks

Beyond the above issues of webpages being moved or redirected, there is a natural "rotting" process that happens to all backlink profiles. Some of the pages with trusted links pointing to your website will go away for a number of reasons. Reclaiming some of these links is a great easy list of relevant websites to canvass.
Also, the beauty of checking for rotted backlinks is that this can be a one time occasional process. It can also be an iterative process if you have a large, established website with a significant backlink portfolio to manage.
There are a bunch of methods for doing this. Here are two you can play with:
Link Tracking Script: You can create a custom script for tracking your links. If you don't have the resources in-house to develop this capacity, check out this great article by Gareth of SEO Doctor, for some great information on this method of reclaiming links and for the script.
Excel: Yes! The Swiss Army knife of SEO tools includes a way for you to accomplish this. Richard Baxter of SEO Gadget, has a great article about this method for reclaiming links, that summarizes how to do it in a more step-by-step fashion.
There are two approaches you can take to backlink reclamation. If you're just starting work on a site or are in the auditing process, you can do this once or occasionally. You can also take a more active stance in managing your backlinks on your website by iterating the process during major site changes or even on a regular basis.

Glowing Reviews for Facebook's Faster Android App

Facebook released a native app for Android devices on Thursday, which it claims is "twice as fast" as its previous effort.
The new app, Facebook for Android 2.0, sees the social network ditching HTML5 in favour of native code, just as it did with its IOS app earlier this year.
Facebook said, "Today we're announcing a faster Facebook app for people who use Android devices. Facebook for Android 2.0 is twice as fast when looking at photos and opening your Timeline and noticeably quicker to launch.
"When you're on your phone, nothing matters more than getting what you want quickly. We're always working to make our apps faster, and in this update we've rebuilt news feed, notifications and Timeline for speed."
The new app has already gone down well with users, who have left glowing reviews on Google Play.
One user said, "This update is so awesome. Specially when you click a photo, it will just pop out just when you click it. And the UI is much greater! Well it deserves a great 5 star!"
Another, slightly more pessimistic user added, "It's about time you got it right! This is the best update for Facebook so far. Its so smooth and it works as it should. Please DONT mess it up!!!!"
As well as its speedy new Android app, Facebook announced on Thursday that the Facebook SDK 3.0 for Android, a new SDK that makes it easier for developers to build social apps, is out of beta.
Facebook for Android is available to download for free from Google Play. µ

5 Steps To Start Sending Social Signals SEO Campaign

Smart Posts IconThe last few years have seen many new changes in the way Google views and calculates SERPS (search engine results page). From Panda to Penguin, it seems the "Big G" is destined to make life for internet marketers that much more difficult. With the advent and popularity of social media platforms Google gained a new metric to measure the popularity and authority of a website.
How much of rankings are effected by social media signs? Only Google knows, but Matt Cutt's announced back in 2010 that Google definitely uses social signs in calculating rankings. Whether in the form of likes, tweets or shares, the writing is on the wall. Social media signs are here to stay and they will continue to get stronger each year. Who knows? Social media may even overtake link building at some point. So it's time to jump on-board the social media bandwagon.
social media bandwagon
So what does that mean for the rest of us vying for top rankings and traffic? Well, the only viable option is to leverage every single social media platform and integrate it into an all conclusive SMM/SEO/SEM campaign.
Here are some sure shot ways of easily (and effectively) incorporating social media signs, which are sure to increase you company's brand awareness and on-line visibility.

Step 1: If you have not done this already, register with all the social media platforms. Yes, this means Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and even Pinterest.
Step 2: Integrate each of the social media platform buttons into your site. This makes sharing, liking or tweeting on your site that much easier for visitors.
Step 3: Post or tweet compelling content or newsworthy stuff. Here is your chance to shine and show viewers you are the authority on a given subject or topic. Do this on a regularly basis. It's very easy to get lazy, but consistency pays off (just like with link building).
Step 4: If you are a local business, increase the number of citations on relevant regional forums and directories. Citations are mentions or listings of your company name and address without any link. These are very powerful metrics for local SEO.
Step 5: Sit back and watch the magic. Just like link building, increasing social media signs in context to SEO is a long term strategy. Persistence pays off.
There is no doubt in the SEO community that social media signs are going to be used heavily by Google over the next few years. You wonder why? Well, social signs are a lot harder to replicate, than say, link building. I am certain there will be software or tools that could automate such processes (and I'm quite certain they already exist).
It's always a catch up game with Google. Just when you think you have everything understood, the Big G changes the rules. Then again, that's what makes SEO so much fun. The landscape is always changing and evolving. And as internet marketers, we too have to adopt with the ever changing guidelines of Google.

7 In House SEO Initiatives for 2013

As we look forward to 2013, the New Year provides limitless opportunities and the chance to nail down our SEO to-do lists. As we go through our lists, it's important to remember that there are short-term SEO tasks that we undertake on an almost daily basis, as well as bigger picture SEO initiatives that may not be implemented overnight and will take time and solid effort.
The seven initiatives listed below are among the most critical to undertake in 2013 for in-house SEOs. If you’re already working on some of them, then it's worth your effort to go all in to reap the maximum SEO rewards.

1. Rel=Author Tag

We're living in an influencer economy of sorts. Influencers can be celebrities, bloggers, authors, or other industry leaders.
Because we're in an influencer economy, and so much content is being created, the one way to differentiate content is by how many other people are sharing that content or talking about that content. An influencer has the ability to share a specific piece of content that gets more shares and gets talked about it by their followers.
For search engines, especially Google, influencers are a great solution to separate the wheat from the chaff. Not so long ago, Matt Cutts said that “over time, as we start to learn more about who the high quality authors are, you could imagine that starting to affect rankings.”

2. Mobile Search

Mobile marketing is becoming increasingly important every year, and that trend will continue in 2013. Already, roughly 16 percent of searches come from mobile devices. This means local searches will be reaching their full potential both in SEO and in PPC.
Local businesses can no longer afford to excuse themselves from SEO or Internet marketing in general. This increase in mobile searches also means that site owners need to ensure that their site is served up well on mobile devices like having one site for desktop and other for mobile device.

3. Social Search Integration

No doubt, you've heard lots of buzz about social search and how Google +1’s and shares are going to be important. Well, this is the year when you will see not just +1’s on Google and Facebook shares on Bing integrated more into traditional search results on topics that are shared, but also related topics on the same site.
Facebook just announced a major social graph search feature this week. This changes the way we search online and over time it will change consumer behavior and search as we know it today.
I tend to think there will be two kinds of search in the near future:
  • A search on documents, videos, blogs, etc. in the form of Google and Bing.
  • A search that's more driven by friends and their recommendations by leveraging Facebook’s social graph.
As an in-house SEO, you can work closely on your Facebook brand pages to ensure that all pictures, posts, etc. are tagged correctly and optimized for search.

4. Video SEO

Video is great for engagement and because of the intrinsic social sharing options in video it is great for rankings. More marketers will be leveraging video content on their site but it would be critical to optimize those videos for SEO.
In-house SEOs will have no dearth of video content in their companies. The challenge is to bring together content from all different departments into a central repository. Many large companies also have a digital asset management (DAM) group where most video content is also stored.
As in-house SEOs, your role is to bring together all the video content and work on optimizing those videos. You can also work on uploading to social channels like YouTube as that will also have big SEO gains.

5. Online PR, SEO & Social Media Integration

We have seen statements from Google that on links embedded in a news release and how much it counts towards rankings. The fact is news releases are great not just from links point of view but overall findability of your content.
The tough part for in-house SEOs is to ensure that SEO is integrated as part of process before any news release goes out. PR or corporate communications can be bit stiff when it comes to time sensitive news releases as they are working under tight deadlines.
In 2013, it's time to integrate yourself with your corporate communications and start optimizing and working social media channels on your press releases.

6. Focus on Google+

Even though community building on Google+ falls in the realm of your social media team, as SEO professionals you need to ensure that there is some sort of focus on Google+ from your social team.
In 2012 we saw steady growth on Google+ and new features being launched on the platform. Depending on the industry, Google+ has the potential to cater to niche audience with its hangout feature a real standout.
From an SEO point of view, allows your visitors to share your content by ensuring that Google+ hooks are embedded in your content.

7. Think Holistically

SEO is simply another channel to acquire customers. As in-house SEO professionals, it's essential for you to not just work with other marketing teams but also learn new skills like PPC, usability, or social media, and adopt new tactics like retargeting.
Think of this as becoming an integrated digital marketer. For current SEO pros to get ahead in their career, it's essential to learn other skills and become an integrated digital marketer.

Summary

As in-house SEO there will be the daily grind that you just can't escape, but it's important to look at the bigger picture especially at the year ahead and list the big picture stuff.
The above initiatives are not something that can be achieved over night and as such requires deeper integration with other teams. And like any big initiatives, this requires time and lot of planning.
Those are my top seven initiatives for 2013. What initiatives do you plan to work on this year?
